West Tower

"Belts Arch"

This Arch was made following a "lease of three lives" to Michael Morris in 1784, to enable him to make a rope walk outside the walls. The Arch is known locally as"Belts Arch", named after an ironmonger whose shop was located here in the 19th Century.

An examination of the masonry of this tower gives an idea of the thickness of the walls and towers; the walls at the base were originally six feet thick, and along the outside of the walls ran a dry moat 30 feet wide
